YouTube Shorts: Does it Offer Anything Different from Instagram Reels and TikTok?

TikTok revolutionized the video content creation industry since its launch in 2018. The app’s algorithm allowed content creators on the platform to rack up millions of views irrespective of their following, i.e. even a creator with a handful of followers could go viral overnight. TikTok’s success inspired two other social media juggernauts, Instagram and YouTube, to launch features that were similar to TikTok.

Instagram launched its Reels feature in 2020, while YouTube launched Shorts in 2021. But do these features offer anything different from TikTok? Or are they all the same? That’s what we’ll find out over the course of this post. So, read on!

The similarities

On the surface, there are several similarities between the three platforms. For starters, all three allow users to pick background music for their videos from a free music catalog. Discovering and viewing content across the three platforms are also very similar. All three platforms work on similar algorithms as well, which means that users without significant followings can also find overnight fame.

The differences

Let’s start with the video length. The maximum video length across all the platforms is 60 minutes. However, on YouTube Shorts, you’ll be limited to 15 second videos if you record videos using the feature itself. So, if you want longer YouTube Shorts videos, you’ll have to upload videos instead of recording them through the feature. So, in terms of flexibility, YouTube Shorts offers more than TikTok and Instagram Reels. However, TikTok has recently announced that it will increase its maximum video length from 1 minute to 3 minutes.

In terms of special effects, Instagram Reels and TikTok have more to offer to users. While TikTok offers diverse green-screen options and AR features, Instagram Reels allows users to get creative by using its huge filter library. YouTube Shorts has a special effects catalog, but as of now, it’s very limited. If it has to match up to the offerings of TikTok and Insta Reels, the folks at YouTube have to add more options to the catalog.

Both TikTok and Instagram Reels have sticker support, which allows creators and brands to engage their target audience. However, YouTube Shorts doesn’t offer any sticker support, which is a major letdown for brands that want to use the feature for gathering feedback from audiences.

YouTube Shorts also falls short in terms of eCommerce capabilities, i.e. users can’t shop using the feature. On the other hand, both TikTok and Instagram Reels have shopping features. In terms of eCommerce potential, Instagram Reels is the biggest player among the three.

Video sharing options on TikTok and YouTube Shorts are limited, as there are no direct messaging options. However, Instagram Reels allows users to share their content with their friends and followers through direct messaging.

Should you use YouTube Shorts?

So, given that YouTube Shorts is still missing several features that both TikTok and Instagram Reels has to offer, you might be wondering if using it is a good idea. Well, the honest answer to this question is that it all depends on your situation. If you’re thinking of starting a brand new channel focused exclusively on short videos, Instagram Reels and TikTok would be the better option.

However, if you already have a YouTube channel and are looking at options to help it grow, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t use YouTube Shorts. You should also remember that YouTube Shorts is bound to improve in the near future, as it’s still a new addition to the platform.
